DU looks to start web-based courses

“The university is looking at the prospect of offering MOOCs,” Singh said.

After overseeing the introduction of a series of academic changes in Delhi University,from the introduction of the four-year undergraduate programme to the meta-college and meta-university courses,Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh is looking at rolling out programmes under Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) format.

“The university is looking at the prospect of offering MOOCs,” Singh said.

While the project will take off only after receiving a go-ahead from the statutory bodies,the university administration is looking at foundation courses under the four-year undergraduate programme and seeking help from its School of Open Learning for this initiative.

With around three lakh students enrolled in the School of Open Learning,distance learning is popular in DU. However,it is only restricted to correspondence courses where students are required to get reading material from the centre and attend classes from time to time.

Students across in the world,with Internet access,will be able to study the course. MOOCs are free online certificate courses. Leading universities that offer MOOCs include Harvard University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Princeton University; Yale; University of Chicago; Cornell; University of California,Berkeley; and Stanford University.
