At 7.30 am on Thursday, the unfurling of the Tricolour on the ramparts of the historic Red Fort against an ashen sky,was greeted by enthusiastic cheers by schoolchildren who had gathered to take part in celebrations marking the 67th year of Indias independence.
The enthusiasm among students was kept alive with patriotic songs. A brief account of Indias struggle for Independence and the history of the Red Fort and monuments in its vicinity could be heard in the background as children and assembled dignitaries awaited the arrival of the Prime Minister.
Dressed in colours of the national flag, the children waived their caps and scarves, cheering loudly as the Prime Ministers cavalcade entered the Red Fort grounds. The Prime Minster inspected the Guard of Honour before he proceeded to unfurl the flag and address the nation.
However, what drew the loudest cheers from students was the release of balloons with flags tied to them.
We have been rehearsing for the event since July 31,but nothing beats the feeling of being here. It was especially nice to hear the Prime Ministers speech. Its something Ill remember for a long time to come, said Ilma,a Class X student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School,Pataudi House, who attended the celebrations for the first time.
But for many like Alisha,a Class VII student from the same school, coming to the Red Fort on Independence Day has become an annual ritual.
This is my third time at the celebrations. The only bit I dont enjoy is waking up early as you have to reach the Fort by 6 am,but besides that it is always great fun, she said.
