Districts courts go on strike on Monday

Lawyers want pecuniary jurisdiction to be enhanced from the existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore.

The co-ordination committee of the Delhi District Court Bar Association is observing a day-long strike in all district courts of the capital on September 29, in protest against the “delay in enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of trial courts”.

“We have unanimously resolved to observe a day-long strike in protest against the delay in amendment of the Delhi High Court Act, 1966. For the past two years, nothing has been done to enhance pecuniary jurisdiction despite recommendation by a full bench of the Delhi High Court. We want the government to table and pass the Bill for the same during the winter session,” Advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, President, Delhi Bar Association said.

Lawyers want pecuniary jurisdiction to be enhanced from the existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore.

“The implementation of the recommendation has been shelved repeatedly… We want Parliament to speed up the process,” a member of the Bar said.

The lawyer also added that the existing pecuniary jurisdiction is “abysmally” low, as against unlimited pecuniary jurisdiction in other parts of the country.

The Bill for enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction was introduced in Rajya Sabha on February 11 this year.

The issue has now been referred to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.
