Years ago,Jenjum Gadis mornings would start with the sounds and the colours of Tirbin, his native village in Arunanchal Pradesh. He didnt realise those hues had seeped into his subconscious. Cut to 2013 and the 31-year-old designers maiden store at The Crescent Mall,Lado Sarai is not only a window to his soul that is forever attached to the Northeast, but also gives one a peak into his global fashion sensibilities.
Located in the same row as stores of Suneet Verma and Satya Paul,it was started by Gadi and old friend Julie Deb,about a month ago. The walls at the store have iron belts as drapes suspended from the ceiling with Northeastern motifs painted on them.
The duo opened the store with an inaugural sale and it was last week that the stores first, fresh collection was displayed. The range, which has especially been designed for the store, comprises Indian wear with kaftans, asymmetrical kurtas, saris, lehenga skirts and harem shararas.
When he started off, people expected Gadi to stick to his Northeastern roots, but he surprised many with his fascination for the humble gota. There is enough of it at the store too. So there is an orange net lehenga with gota border and a royal blue blouse, fuschia kaftans with metallic embroidery on the neck like an armour and frills on the pallu of a yellow sari, among others. There is a burst of colours ranging from blue, lemon, silver, and golden,to pink, red, orange, black and green. Gadi stays loyal to satin, crepe, georgette and chiffon.
He makes the dupatta disappear, and instead converts it into a jacket for kurtas and saris. Our favourites are the silver gota zipper jacket kurta and a sleeveless jacket with shiny birds and insect motifs made of gota. Clearly, this is his forte. Apart from clothes, the store also houses a few clutches created by accessory designer James Mangte.
Naturally, one expects the price range to be exorbitant but Gadi surprises once again by keeping it between Rs 10,000 and
Rs 30,000.
