MP lyricist
On the sidelines of a press conference where Congress MP Kapil Sibal formally announced his candidature from the Chandni Chowk parliamentary constituency, Sibal was seen telling reporters about his stint with musician A R Rehman. Sibal said two upcoming Bollywood films — Welcome Back and Hera Pheri 2 — will feature songs penned by him.
Producing evidence
During a hearing on a plea seeking action against the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for an alleged hate speech, the Delhi High Court asked the lawyer for the Election Commission if they had actually seen the “offending material” on the MNS website. The court then asked the lawyers sitting in court to open the website and show it to the EC lawyer.
“Now you have seen the material, the matter has been brought to your notice. Do something about it now,” the court said.
Information overload
Officials in Gurgaon administration claim their biggest headaches were RTI applications. “I had one recently that had 70 questions in it. And I have so many coming in each day. I seem to be clearing out more RTI applications than files,” one of them said. Another official said, “There is this fellow who has been constantly after our lives for over a year, filing one application after another, sometimes with weird requests. I finally met him a few days ago outside a court. I was compelled to ask him if I had caused him any harm personally for him to have inflicted such misery upon me.”
No phones!
When the mobile phone of a reporter started ringing at a press briefing in Mathura last week, actress and former Rajya Sabha MP Hema Malini quickly stood up and said, “Please mobile off kar dijiye na! Disturb hota hai.”
Hidden talent
While attending a seminar on judicial reforms, Law Minister Kapil Sibal startled all delegates present when he mentioned his poetry and a new album. Lawyers and judges at the conference were amused when Sibal promptly recited his poem, and then took out his iPad and proceeded to play a song he had written, sung by Adnan Sami.
Superstition
When Raj Babbar turned up to file his nomination papers as the Congress candidate in Ghaziabad, he attempted to jump the queue. But former superstar or not, he was told firmly by the returning officer that he would have to stand in line and wait his turn. Later, Babbar revealed that his haste was due to the fact that a priest had told him that he’d be have to file his nominations between 1 pm and 2 pm to ensure his victory.
Firm stand
Irked at the continued lapses on part of the DUSIB and Delhi government in improving conditions at night shelters in the capital, the Delhi HC issued summons to the DUSIB CEO. The lawyer for the civic agency suggested that a lower official could be summoned instead. The court said the lawyer seemed afraid for the chief. “We are not calling him here to castigate him, we are calling him here so that concrete decisions can be taken,” the court said.
Twitter parody
After Art of Living guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was heard making pro-BJP remarks, a parody account appeared on microblogging site Twitter. A series of tweets with pictures of Sunny Leone, pro-AAP remarks and anti-BJP comments were posted on the account before Art of Living followers clarified the account was fake and cautioned people not to confuse it with the official one.
