Delhi underground

With the elections out of the way,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit seems to be in top form, and sparing no one.

Wake-up call
With the elections out of the way,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit seems to be in top form, and sparing no one. After giving the municipal corporation a dressing down over usage of funds, the latest in the CM’s line of fire is Social Welfare Minister Mangat Ram Singhal. The minister, who is known to doze off during Cabinet meetings, was recently shaken out of his slumber by the CM when found snoozing during a seminar organised by the department. The CM bombarded him with questions on the Mission Convergence Scheme implemented by his department and left the minister embarrassed asking him to stay “alert” for the sake of the department.

Working out snags
The ITDC is set to revamp three of its hotels in the Capital for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. At a recent event, the ITDC boss assured the hotels would provide quality service and the best accommodation for athletes and their families. And most of his commitments received commendations and affirmation from the Commonwealth Games Federation officials, who recently visited the Capital to review Games arrangements. But for one complaint — the toilet flush was not working at ITDC-Ashoka. However, terming the problem as a ‘minor snag’,ITDC officials assured no such problem would occur during the Games.

Once bitten twice shy
Months after a Delhi policeman was reportedly bitten by an HIV positive patient,he is still panic-striken. Head Constable Rajesh Kumar, posted at the Jahangirpuri police station for the past two years, has now written to senior police officers of the Northwest district seeking a transfer. His application specifically mentions the incident where the HIV positive person bit him as he tried to stop him from beating his wife. Also referring to other “injuries” while on emergency duty,Kumar requested his seniors to transfer him.

Work in progress
After Delhi Finance Minister A K Walia expressed interest in salvaging the ITO-flyover project, the Delhi government forwarded it to UTPEC for review. However, when a meeting was held to discuss this, none of the officers carried papers prepared by them on the proposed designs for the flyover, compelling them to scribble on the papers during the meeting. The L-G then sent all these “designs” to the Public Works Department for consideration. PWD engineers given the task are now perplexed, desperately trying to make sense of the carelessly doodled sketches.

Bogged down
It proved to be quite a week for Shahdara (Karkardooma court) Bar Association president Mahesh Sharma. It started on Tuesday when a lawyer was abducted by five unidentified men from inside the court complex but was released later because they mistook him for someone else. While the lawyer was describing the incident to Sharma the next day, another brawl broke out when a lawyer passed a comment against a woman law student visiting the court for training. The lawyer reportedly slapped her and then some women advocates beat him black and blue. Sharma had to intervene here. Within an hour of this, another fight took place when lawyers beat up three men trying to “abduct” a person, who later turned out to be an accused. Being president,Sharma had to mediate here as well. “This is unfair to me. The election for the new Bar is to take place this month and technically,I may not be considered the president. But as you see,I have to do all this work,” Sharma complained. On Thursday he will be busy coordinating the token strike called over inadequate security arrangements in court complexes.

Step on it
Fed up with the slow pace of investigations into the alleged scam involving the DDA Housing Scheme 2008,the Lieutenant-Governor has directed the Economic Offenses Wing of the Delhi Police to wind up the investigation “as soon as possible”. Successful allotees of the draw conducted in December last year are still awaiting possession of flats as the Ministry of Urban Development had directed that no allotment will be carried out till all investigations are wrapped up. Officials at Raj Niwas confirmed that the EOW has conveyed to the L-G that the investigation will be wrapped up by June 15 at the very latest.

Sweet surrender
The local police of Massorie village in Ghaziabad was in a dilemma of sorts when a man, reportedly famished for long, got angry and climbed up a tall tower. Despite several requests he refused to get down. Villagers informed the cops that he was hungry and scaled the tower in distress. Not willing to buy this, the policemen first resorted to their typical way of warning and sincere advises to the man but when everything else failed, they had to come back with jalebis for him. And the man actually came down knowing the sweets were waiting for him. Apart from the sweets, though, the man was also served some severe reprimand by the cops.
