(Express Photo)A rickshaw puller was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a young vagabond woman and thrashing her in the Amar Colony area on Wednesday, the Delhi Police said.
The police have identified the accused rickshaw puller as Banty Singh, 48, who lives on the footpath near Moolchand Metro Station. The victim was also taken to the police station.
According to the police, initially, they were not able to record the girl’s statement as she was only versed in Bengali. However, with the help of a translator and a lady constable, she told the police that the accused had raped her the previous night.
“The girl further disclosed that he had made physical relations with her on May 4. He is running a pedal rickshaw at Moolchand Metro Station,” said a police official.
Interrogation revealed that the girl, a vagabond from West Bengal and is not a minor, he added.
The victim underwent a medical examination at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and a rape case has been registered at Amar Colony police station.
The police rushed to the spot on receiving a call informing about a woman being beaten up by a rickshaw puller.
According to the crime data by the Delhi Police, as compared to last year (455), the number of rape cases dropped by 18.68 per cent with 370 cases filed between January 1 and March 31.
This year, 379 rape cases were registered compared to 444 such cases filed last year. The molestation cases in the first three months this year saw a drop of 14.63 per cent compared to 2024.
In 2023, 422 rape cases were filed and 547 molestation cases were recorded between January and March, which is 30.71 per cent higher compared to this year.
