Around three months after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asked the Home Department to take charge of the Lampur Detention Centre and bring it under the prison administration, the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) approved the same on Tuesday and directed Delhi Prisons to take over the centre located in Narela.
The order signed by Superintendent I (Prison Headquarter) dated April 8 stated, “In pursuance of the letter of Deputy Secretary (Home) dated April 7, 2025… vide which the approval of honourable Delhi L-G was conveyed on the following points…”
The points mentioned in the order were taking over the assets, including management and operation of the centre by Delhi Prisons from the Social Welfare Department, as well as transfer of 15.6 acre of land to Delhi Prisons, out of the total 18.4-acre land at Sewa Sadan in Lampur.
“…officers of Prison Department, GNCTD, are deputed to take over the assets… on Wednesday at 11 am from officers of Social Welfare Department, GNCTD,” it added. The officers in included Superintendent (Prisons) Ajit Kumar, Deputy Superintendent I Pradeep Sharma, and Assistant Superintendent Vikas.
Last December, the MHA had suggested that the overall charge of the detention centre should be given to the Home Department under which the prisons in Delhi fall. The reason behind the move was the similarity in the nature of work and a more streamlined approach. A committee was formed, after which multiple visits were made to the detention centre to oversee the issues for a better understanding. The recommendations were later submitted to the Home Department.
A revamped building, training jail staff, coordination with security personnel, use of technology, an increase in manpower, and a better drainage system – these were some of the recommendations made by the committee formed to oversee the change of guard. In January, an official had said, “We made some recommendations about the state of the building, allocation of funds, and training of officials…”
Repair work as per the recommendations is set to begin soon, said officials.
