Man shot dead in South Delhi, suspected to be revenge killing

Five months after a man was arrested for gunning down a businessman,the alleged shooter’s father was shot at least a dozen times in the Aya Nagar area of South Delhi on Sunday morning in what is suspected to be a revenge killing, said officers.
The incident happened around 6:30 am when the deceased, Ratan Lal, was going to a cow shed to get milk. “At least three persons in a small hatchback approached him and opened fire. The victim died on the spot,” DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said.
In May, 10 rounds of shots were fired at businessman Arun Lohiya, who was driving a Scorpio, near the Commander Chowk in Mehrauli, when he was intercepted by the alleged assailants. “The accused, Deepak, knew Lohiya and belonged to the same village as him. They had a dispute over some land in the village. Prima facie, it seems like a case of personal enmity,” an officer said.
Lohiya, a resident of Aya Nagar, was taken to the nearby hospital, where he died.
In June, about three weeks later, accused Deepak and one other shooter were nabbed by the Delhi Police after a brief exchange of fire near Chirag Delhi- Khanpur road.
Police said Deepak’s family and Lohia’s family were at cross since 2023 over the land dispute. Deepak was allegedly beaten at the behest of Lohia and his father Rambir in 2023, which led to a panchayat meeting. The police are now searching for the shooters of Ratan Lal.
Dharmender, Deepak’s cousin, told reporters on Sunday that he suspected that Rambir’s family was behind the killing of his uncle Ratan Lal. “He was a simple man. The dispute was between Lohias and Deepak. And Deepak is in jail. Why take it out on his father?,” Dharmender said.
