'The door you are now opening is very dangerous': Kejriwal decries Centre over CAA

"The door that you are opening is very dangerous for the country and we can't even imagine the number of illegal immigrants who will now come to india. Today, even those who came before 2014, do not have rights. By giving them citizenship, you are making them eligible for government jobs. The illegal immigrants from Pakistan will now be given government jobs? They will get ration cards? Today, Delhi has around 72 lakh ration card holders. These fall short. We write to the Centre time and again to increase the number of ration card holders. The Centre does not do that but it is willing to give ration cards to the people coming from Pakistan," said Arvind Kejriwal.

Farmers raise slogans against Centre from Delhi's Ramlila Maidan

Farmers in large numbers gathered at the Ramlila Ground here on Thursday to take part in a "Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat" that has been convened to protest against the BJP-led Centre's policies regarding the farming sector.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmer organisations that spearheaded a protest at Delhi's borders in 2020-21 against three agriculture laws that have since been repealed, has said a resolution will be passed at the "Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat" to "intensify the fight" against the Centre's policies.

Explained | How Ramlila Maidan came to be a political protests theatre

Ramlila Maidan was formed by filling up a pond in the 1930s under the British government. For years, it has been the site of the Ramlila first started under Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, thus getting its name.

Vinayak Bharne, then professor of planning at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, had written for The Indian Express in 2012 of the Ramlila Maidan, “It was here in June 1975 that Jayaprakash Narayan led his mammoth rally with over a lakh people protesting against Indira Gandhi’’s government. It was here, following the Emergency, that several anti-Congress opposition leaders hosted a rally to form the Janata Party. Ironically, the origins of this maidan could not have been more “non-democratic”. It was part of a cordon sanitaire, a typical planning gesture of new colonial cities, wherein a deliberate physical gap separated indigenous habitats from new ones for supposedly hygienic reasons.
