A day after the Delhi Municipal Corporation reported a case of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), officials on Thursday said that it is still a suspected case and has not been confirmed so far.
MCD spokesperson Amit Kumar said that it is not a confirmed case and to be on the safe side, the MCD has asked the director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) to look into the matter.
“There is nothing to be concerned about or panic as Delhi does not have the congenial climatic condition for Japanese Encephalitis,” he said, adding that a letter has been written to the Union Health Ministry to get the scientist of NVBDCP look into the matter. On Thursday, MCD Additional Medical Health officer, Vector Borne Disease, in an order said that a case of Japanese Encephalitis was reported from South West Delhi’s Bindapur area.
“Keeping in view the above, all DHOs and Epidemiologists are directed to intensify Vector control measures, including larval source reduction and community-based initiatives such as awareness campaigns for prevention and control of JE,” the order said. Sources said the order issued on Wednesday was put in haste.
JEV infection can be transmitted to a person if he is bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus.
It can then spread from person to person.
