Delhi govt plans to discontinue streetscaping project, AAP lashes out

The BJP government is planning to discontinue the Delhi Streetscaping Project, said officials. It was one of the ambitious projects of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to repair and beautify roads.
“The high costs involved with the project make it impossible for the government to carry it forward. We are first focusing on improving the basic issues such as repairing potholes, proper illumination of roads and reducing traffic congestion. We will not continue with this project,” Verma said.
With plans to streetscape roads spanning 540 km in the city on the lines of European roads under this project, the previous government had launched it on a pilot basis in 2020 with 16 stretches. However, the government did not expand the project further.
A streetscaping division was also created, but the appointed officials were later transferred to other departments.
On Saturday, the AAP lashed out at the ruling government. “The BJP cannot tolerate the fact that the AAP government launched a project to make Delhi’s roads clean and beautiful. Before the elections, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised the people of Delhi that no development work undertaken by the AAP government in the public interest would be obstructed,” it stated.
