A Delhi-based doctor was allegedly held captive at gunpoint for hours on Friday night by a group of men who entered his clinic posing as patients, the police said, adding that the accused demanded Rs 5 lakh from him and threatened to kill him.

The accused, aged between 16-23 years, had been planning to target the doctor for days, the police said. Four accused were arrested and the fifth, a juvenile, was apprehended.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the doctor, identified as Nadeem Ahmed, was at his North Delhi clinic. Five men entered his clinic, pretended one of them was sick and demanded to see the doctor. As there were no other staffers in the evening, the men were not stopped and entered Ahmed’s room, the police said.

In his complaint, lodged early on Saturday, Ahmed said the men first assaulted him and threatened him with a country-made pistol. They then demanded Rs 5 lakh from him as “protection money”. Ahmed said he was held captive and only let go when he assured the men that he would pay them.

The police said a case was registered and all CCTVs at the clinic and in the area were taken to identify the accused.

“Teams were tasked to identify and arrest the accused at the earliest. With the help of one of the CCTVs from the clinic and local enquiry, two accused were identified,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Northeast, Joy N Tirkey, said.

The police learnt the accused were history sheeters and first arrested 18-year-old Haider Ali and apprehended a juvenile. Based on their interrogation, the other gang members were identified and Faisal (18), Saqib (19) and Mohd Zaim (23) were arrested, the police said. Faisal was caught with the weapon while Saqib had come out on bail two months ago, the police added.

“Zaim was the conspirator. He works as a scrap dealer in the area and hatched the plan to rob the doctor as he suspected the doctor was rich,” an officer said.

The police said all the men stayed in Bhajanpura and planned to go to the clinic after 8 pm as fewer patients and staffers were present then.
