Delhi court allows ‘conman’ Sukesh Chandrashekhar cooler in jail

(PTI/File)Amidst the scorching heat, a Delhi court recently allowed alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar a cooler in Mandoli jail where he is lodged for allegedly extorting Rs 200 crore from Aditi Singh, the wife of former Fortis promoter Shivinder Singh, under the pretext of securing bail for her husband.
Sukesh, who was represented by Advocate Anant Malik, had alleged that his central cooling system in prison was switched off “on purpose”. He also claimed that he is developing rashes on his skin due to the “unprecedented heat” and that his BP has also dropped.
“…in the backdrop of this unprecedented situation, contention relating to health of inmate/accused Sukesh Chandrashekhar has to be interpreted under the umbrella of general principle that careful attention is not only to be given for treatment to sick person but also to the matter connected with health of prisoner,” held Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Court in an order dated June 3.
The ASJ also noted that while no provision for providing private coolers to inmates exists in the 2018 Prison Rules, the “circumstance” of the unprecedented heat in Delhi could not have been “contemplated to emerge in the future” while framing the rules.
Four days after the order was passed by ASJ Chander Jit Singh, Sukesh wrote a letter to District Judge Sanjay Sharma complaining that the cooler had not been provided yet.
This current case on Sukesh is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and is based on an FIR filed by Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
