Delhi Confidential: When Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated another capital

The union minister now wants Vijayawada to reclaim its lost legacy that has been ceded to Telangana, along with Andhra Pradesh’s former capital Hyderabad and the famous Ramoji film city.

Venkaiah Naidu, who will be present at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new capital city of Amaravati Thursday, was recently in Andhra Pradesh to attend the inauguration of a ‘Capital’ of another kind. Capital is the name a seven-screen multiplex in Vijayawada, seemingly inspired by the new capital city. Back in Delhi, Naidu, who hails from the state, lamented the fact that while Vijayawada was the birthplace of Telugu cinema, over the years the industry had moved to Hyderabad. The union minister now wants Vijayawada to reclaim its lost legacy that has been ceded to Telangana, along with Andhra Pradesh’s former capital Hyderabad and the famous Ramoji film city.

National Education Day, the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, has been an important annual event for the HRD Ministry since 2008. Last year, the day was commemorated at Vigyan Bhawan in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee. This time, however, the government has found itself in a quandary as the birth anniversary is coinciding with Diwali, a national holiday. After much deliberation, the HRD Ministry has finally decided to skip the celebration as it is not feasible to organise a large-scale event on Diwali.

Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik may have come a long way from his gun-toting days in the early 90s, but he continues to remain a “terrorist” for the BSF. The force Wednesday organised an event, attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, to honour its martyrs. To showcase its 50-year-long illustrious journey, it played a short film. Among the various achievements, the film counted Yasin Malik as one of the over 2,000 terrorists that the force had arrested.
