The Dabri flyover on Pankha Road, already delayed by almost a year, missed its August 15 deadline. Located at Dabri More, the 1.5-km flyovers trial runs were to begin on Independence Day,but officials said they would require another month to open it for traffic.
We cannot open the flyover for the commuters without ensuring safety and quality tests, an official said.
South municipal corporation mayor Savita Gupta said: Street lights on the flyover have been installed. Without adequate light,it will be dangerous to let cars ply on it at night. We believe it will be fixed in a fortnight and we will be able to open the flyover in a month.
The project was launched in 2009 to connect areas in West and Southwest Delhi and reduce the traffic woes of Uttam Nagar,Janakpuri,Palam and Dwarka residents.
The erstwhile MCD took up the project following complaints from people residing along Pankha Road and those who commute on this stretch about getting caught in traffic snarls for hours.
The flyover was to be ready by September 2011. Construction was held up because the Delhi Jal Board had to shift its pipelines to make way for the pillars,high-voltage overhead cables had to be removed, and a vegetable market at the site refused to move out.
The delay had a cascading effect on the slip road under the flyover that was to connect Pankha Road with Dwarka. We believe it will take some more time, Mayor Gupta said.
