DEC sniffs forgery: Different people with same UID numbers

The Seelampur area houses a very high number of Delhi’s migrant population,as well as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh

With assembly elections nearing and despite the various initiatives of the Election Commission to rid the electoral roll of bogus and duplicate voters, the Delhi Election Commission on Monday informed the police for registration of an FIR with the Seelampur police station after detecting at least 32 cases of alleged forgery of the UID slips and electricity bills as provided by new applicants from the area. The Seelampur area houses a very high number of Delhi’s migrant population,as well as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

As one of the documents used to procure a new voters’ ID,an alleged unique identification number (UID) ? 229575371505 ? was provided by one Rukhsar (18),daughter of Shandam Haq. Another document with the same “unique” number was also provided by one Ramjano, aged 60. Similarly,Neetu (28),daughter of Raja Ram,provided an Aadhar document with a “unique” number ? 409800817804 ? which was also provided by Farha (25),wife of Intezaar.

While all these documents ? as provided to the State Election Commission for issuance of fresh voter cards ? bear the same “unique” numbers, they have different photos pasted on them, have different addresses too,but all in Seelampur. Taking a note of this trend, the Delhi Election Commission on Monday lodged criminal prosecution in the 32 cases.

“We have made a police complaint and asked for criminal prosecution of vested interests who seem to have forged copies of the UID enrollment slips and electricity bills. Cases of duplication have been noticed in 32 cases so far,and all from Seelampur. A full investigation will be carried out to find out the people working behind this and criminal proceedings will be initiated against these 32,” Delhi’s Chief Election Officer Vijay Dev told Newsline.

Officials said it was possible for people with vested interests to take undue advantage of the fact that UID enrollment slips can be accepted as one of the ID proofs needed to apply for an election card, even though the “unique” numbers of citizens are not fed into the Election Commission’s system to automatically detect duplication.
