Days after sexual assault, woman staffer at Delhi govt hospital succumbs to injuries

Days after she was allegedly sexually assaulted, a 40-year-old staffer at a Delhi government hospital died during treatment on Sunday, said police.

According to police, the woman was allegedly raped by a known person, who also allegedly inflicted injuries on her while she was on duty at the hospital. The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Police said the accused had fled after the incident and was arrested later the same day.

A senior police officer said, “The woman was admitted to the same hospital for treatment and has succumbed to the injuries. The exact sequence of events is being ascertained. Other staffers at the hospital didn’t know much.”

Police said a case was registered under sections 376 (rape) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after the incident.

Police said the woman had worked as a private help at the hospital. The accused had allegedly sexually assaulted her and beaten her up, added police.
