There is nothing subtle about the newly-opened Hype at The Shangri-La hotel on Ashoka Road.

The lack of Bollywood music is the only dampner at Hype, the posh new nightclub in town

There is nothing subtle about the newly-opened Hype at The Shangri-La hotel on Ashoka Road. Its blingy décor and the thundering sound system makes its intent clear when you walk down the corridor leading to the latest nightclub in town: this is obviously a place where you can dance away your blues till the wee hours of the morning. “A night club is meant to be about music and a cool ambience. There’s no point investing lakhs in fancy furniture,” quips DJ Aqeel from behind the console, the proprietor of the place. Aqeel opened Hype last December in Mumbai and following its success there, has now got it to the Capital. “I have wanted to set up a place in Delhi for the past three years. It is only now that I am satisfied with the venue and the kind of floor space it affords,” he adds, pointing to the beige-wooden dance floor, that can easily accommodate 400 people. With a space of 10,000 square feet, the Delhi outlet is even bigger than the original one in Mumbai, which has a floor space of 7,000 square feet.

Everything about Hype is complimented to accentuate the senses, from the moment you enter. Once inside,a sound-proof double door opens up to a wide wooden dance floor. Look up,and 1,100 diamante lights that change colour in sync with the beats of the music, stare you down. There are mirrors everywhere, while the railings separating the dance floor from the sitting area, are artfully decked up with LED tube lights. These too are coordinated with the music. The wall behind the DJs console has equaliser panels running along its breadth, with lights that almost come to life to the sound of music. Heavy purple drapes with a glass door separate the VIP seating area from the dance area. The shelves of the semi-circular bar tease you with fancy Cristal champagne bottles, while the bartenders impress guests with their juggling tricks. “We have offered the best of what nightclubs internationally offer,” says DJ Assad Namazi,Aqeel’s business partner in the venture.

The music though,is something a regular Delhi clubgoer might be a tad disappointed with. Despite his association with Bollywood,Aqeel keeps film tracks at a minimal, playing instead a mix of hip hop, trance, house and R and B. The place is mostly reserved for ‘private members’,though walk-in couples are allowed only on weekends. The entry charges are Rs 5,000 (Rs 2,000 entrance and Rs 3,000 cover charge) per couple.
