Dadri lynching: Sisters’ weddings bring healing touch to Bisara

Hindus keep promise, help Muslim neighbour conduct weddings.

The village of Bisara seemed to return to normalcy two weeks after 50-year-old Mohammed Akhlaq was beaten to death by a mob, following accusations of cow slaughter and beef consumption against his family. Sunday saw residents coming together for the weddings of two Muslim girls.

At the village’s government primary school campus, daughters of a daily-wage labourer, Hakim Khan, were married on Sunday afternoon, with help from the Hindu community.

“After the incident, the grooms’ families were apprehensive of going ahead with the wedding. However, some of us went and convinced them to hold the wedding in Bisara,” said Sanjay Rana, the village head.

Meanwhile, Hindu residents and local administration officials helped Hakim’s family to organise the wedding. “Some Hindu residents gave money to the family while others helped in putting the shamiana (tent). Almost the entire village contributed towards the expenditure of the wedding. Hundreds of residents, including administration and police personnel, were present,” added Rana.

Talking to The Indian Express, Hakim said, “I had reservations about going ahead with my daughters’ weddings and I expressed my concerns to people, including the pradhan. I was not sure if the wedding could take place peacefully. I did not want any ruckus in front of their in-laws. But everything happened without any disruption. Hindus and Muslims have been living together in this village for more than 50 years. Today, they proved that the unfortunate incident has not broken this brotherhood.”

Having appealed to residents of Bisara to maintain communal harmony, Rana added that the village wanted peace in the area and did not want “some miscreants affecting the brotherhood which has existed for several years”.
