Dabbu’s mother Saroj had asked him to have his lunch. But he refused. His friend Vishakh called out to him and he went off, telling his mother he would be back soon.
“But he never came back. He went away, far away, leaving me behind,” Saroj wept.
Suraj, affectionately called Dabbu, was returning home after getting a photocopy of his Aadhar card for some work when he was mowed down by the bus. He lived in one of the houses behind a row of shops lining HC Sen Road.

“The entire neighbourhood ran out onto the road screaming about this killer bus out on a rampage. I also left my washing and rushed. Someone from our locality had been killed in the accident, people were shouting. I could not make out who it was in the all the chaos and I came back inside. Then, a neighbour came running inside and told me that it was my Dabbu. I ran back a second time, this time to find his mangled body under the wheels of the bus. It was all over,” Saroj said.
Dabbu’s father Brij Mohan was murdered 15 years ago on this very road stretch, relatives said. Dabbu, who walked with a slight limp, was brought up by his uncle. His mother and brother also live with his uncle.
He sold breakfast on a pushcart with the uncle who sheltered the family after his father was murdered. Another uncle, Shivam, said, “Dabbu suffered from a birth defect which caused him incontinence. So he could never get a job anywhere. He was the only one who earned and gave his mother money. His sister is married, while his brother is unemployed.”
