Cop electrocuted while inspecting crime scene, dies after battling for life for a week

A policeman, who was electrocuted when he went near a high-tension wire while inspecting a crime scene in Najafgarh, died on Saturday after battling for his life for a week, said officials.

Constable Hemant Yadav, 30, was posted in Dwarka district’s Anti-Burglary Cell. On July 13, Yadav was in the Ghasipura area to examine the crime scene in a theft case.

When the complainant suggested that the thief might have entered the house via the roof, Yadav went to the roof along with a colleague.

While trying to have a clear view of the adjacent roof to get more clues, Yadav did not realise that he was close to a high-tension wire. The constable’s clothes caught fire following a short-circuit and he was electrocuted. His colleague ran to his rescue and doused the fire immediately. Yadav was admitted to a hospital at Dwarka Mor. He was later referred to AIIMS burn block and trauma center. He suffered 60% second-degree superficial and deep electric flash burns, For seven days, Yadav fought for his life before succumbing to injuries on Saturday, police said. He hailed from Haryana’s Rewari and is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old daughter. On Sunday, he was cremated in his village.”All possible assistance is being given to Yadav’s family,” DCP Ankit Singh, Dwarka, said.

A BSES official said that the wire was installed over 50 years ago in an unauthorised colony. He said that despite being served a notice, the owner didn’t rectify the position of the wire as per the CEA (Central Electricity Authority) guidelines. “We (BSES) extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” he said.

An FIR was filed at Najafgarh police station.
