Constable shoots self, kin blame cops for ‘frame-up’

A 24-Year-Old police constable shot himself with his service revolver while on duty at the Bilaspur police station,in Gurgaon on Thursday afternoon.

Vikas,a resident of Kharkhari village in Gurgaon, had been recently sent on deputation. No suicide note has been recovered, police said, adding that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Vikas’s family members claimed that he was depressed over a “false case” registered against him by the Bhiwadi police. They claimed that his detractors did this because he was not on good terms with a senior.

According to Vikas’s elder brother, the case pertained to a shootout between police personnel and some suspects.

“Another constable fired at the criminal, who was later hospitalised in Safdarjung Hospital. Vikas did not even fire, but police mentioned his name in their report. They also facilitated the filing of an FIR against him. He had been depressed ever since,” said Neeraj, his brother.

The shooting incident had occurred recently, when police received information about a few persons in a dumper truck robbing vehicles on NH-8. A special team was constituted, and when the truck came from the Gurgaon end, policemen signalled it to stop. But the driver tried to run over the policemen and flee in the direction of Dharuhera. The team set off in hot pursuit, and caught up with the accused in Bhiwadi,Rajasthan.

Police sources claim the cornered occupants of the truck began firing and pelting stones at the policemen — injuring three of them. By the time the Bhiwadi police arrived, the driver of the truck had been shot.

The Bhiwadi police rushed the injured driver to a hospital, and later registered a case against their Gurgaon counterparts.

“I had spoken to Vikas, and he admitted he was depressed because the police were trying to frame him. We met the Commissioner of Police, who ordered an inquiry,” said Neeraj.
