The Delhi government is expected to begin the zone-wise colour coding of autorickshaws in the next three months. Once complete, the scheme will ensure that an auto driver of a particular zone does not deny ferrying passengers heading to that zone after sunset.
A meeting on the issue was held between officials from Transport department and Traffic Police on Tuesday and six zones were chalked out based on traffic patterns.
The zones are trans-Yamuna,South,Southwest,West,Northwest and Outer Delhi. The last zone will include North,Central and New Delhi, an official said.
Officials said the colour scheme will reduce inconvenience faced by passengers who rely on autos to get home after work.
The nearly one lakh autos plying in the city will be allowed to travel in any part of the city, but after sundown a driver will not be allowed to turn down a passenger heading to the autos zone,Transport officials said.
The auto owners will be given the first option to register themselves in zones they live in. The Transport department will also prepare a list to check if any zone has too many autos.
The autorickshaw owners can register themselves in other zones also,in case the owner is not the driver of the vehicle, a Transport official said. The autos will be registered in a particular zone for a stipulated period, and will be allowed to change the zone after its expiry.
The colours are yet to be finalised, but they will be displayed on the front and rear of the autos through a colour strip. The final details for this proposal have been worked out and it will be forwarded to the Transport minister for approval. We are hoping to have this system in place within the next three months, an official said.
Once this comes into play,an auto driver will not be able to refuse taking a passenger of his or her zone at night without facing penal action, the official said.
The Traffic Police will help enforce the system.
