Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday met Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to seek his help in resolving the Jor Bagh karbala issue. Dikshit requested that the Home Ministry consider the possibility of withdrawing cases against those booked in rioting cases last after a clash between locals police in 2012 over the burial ground.
Speaking to Newsline,Dikshit said she met Shinde to try and resolve the dispute amicably.
My government wants to settle this dispute peacefully and so we discussed with the Home Minister the possibility of withdrawing cases against those booked for rioting. The Home Minister has asked Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna to look into the issue, Dikshit said. Union Minority Affairs Minister K Rehman Khan and Chief Secretary D M Spolia were also present at the meeting.
In January last year, the long dispute over the shrine led to a violent clash between police and locals. According to police, locals had allegedly tried to pull down a gate leading to karbala,a burial ground in B K Dutt Colony in Jor Bagh. The clash left several police personnel and residents injured.
Last month, the High Court had asked the Chief Secretary to look into the demarcation of land around the karbala after the New Delhi Municipal Council informed the court that it was unable to implement an earlier HC order to construct a boundary wall around it because the property was disputed.
