The Horticulture department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to put into action its plan to allot its parks to Resident Welfare Associations for maintenance and beautification.
Though the MCD had come up with the idea last year, the plan could not be implemented at the time as only four RWAs had shown interest. The corporation, however, claims this year many RWAs have come forward to beautify and maintain the parks, especially for the Commonwealth Games.
According to Dharamvir Singh, chairperson of MCD Garden Committee, all RWAs that are allotted MCD parks, will be given financial assistance at the rate of Rs 6,000 per acre every month to engage gardeners and procure plants. Many RWAs and even some NGOs have shown interest in the scheme. We are, however, yet to compile details like which parks will be allotted to whom, Singh said.
The MCD has 14,636 parks spread over an area of 5,560 acres. Following the success of a scheme started over four years ago to allow private organisations to run its parks the civic agency considered allotting parks to RWAs.
Under this scheme, the MCD will pay for labour charges unlike in the case of the 200 MCD parks currently run by private companies, where it only provides services.
