Kochi based Nimmy A G took the sole lead with six points after defeating Amruta Mokal in the seventh round of the ongoing Amity 39th National Women Challengers Chess Championship at Naurang house on Wednesday.

Kochi based Nimmy A G took the sole lead with six points after defeating Amruta Mokal in the seventh round of the ongoing Amity 39th National Women Challengers Chess Championship at Naurang house on Wednesday. Top seed Chandika Divyasree of Andhra Pradesh along with Tamilnadu trio Mahalakshmi,Michelle Catherina and R Bharathi are occupying the joint second spot with five and half points. In the eighth round Nimmy takes on top seed Divyasree while Bharathi paired with Mahalakshmi and Michelle will play with Mokal.

Lohan hits 6-under

Delhi’s Abhinav Lohan returned a superb six-under-66 to take the lead in the opening round of the PGTI Players Championship at Coimbatore Golf Club. Abhinav Lohan’s first round 66 was punctuated by seven birdies and a lone bogey. Lohan sanked two 20-feet birdie putts on the second and third. Abhinav had four more birdies on the eighth,10 th ,11 th and 15 th. Delhi’s Shamim Khan is also on joint second at four-under-68.

Vani tied 6th

Playing her first professional tournament,former top amateur of the country,Vani Kapoor,hit a 3-over 75 at the Karnataka Golf Association Club in the Rs. 10 lakh Women’s Pro Golf event despite finding water on the very first hole. Bangalore’s Sharmila Nicollet is leading the event at 1-under 71. Vani,who turned 18 this year,said: “I was three-over for the front nine and even for the back nine. Actually I kept missing on the wrong side of the greens and could not chip-putt to save myself when I missed greens. The pins were challenging but I should have done better.”

Ryan Academy win

Aman Kumar contributed with a fine all round display (41 & 3/39), Rohit Mathur (54) scored a half century while Kartik (3/14) chipped in with a three wicket haul to help Ryan Academy beat PMG by 53 runs in the Lakhani Armaan Under-16 cricket tournament.

Brief scores: Ryan Academy 237 all out in 49.5 overs (Rohit Mathur 54,Aman Kumar 41,Susheel Kumar 4/56); PMG 184 allout in 46.2 overs (Anil Sharma 50,Aman Kumar 3/39,Kartik 3/41)

Cricket trials

An open trial to select players for the All India Cash Prize T-20 cricket tournament in October,will be held at the Ramjas Sports complex ground at 7:00 am. There is no fees to take part in the trial which will have ex Delhi Ranji player Arun Singh as the selector.
