Jamia students allege manhandling by cops

New Delhi: Students of Jamia Millia Islamia,who are on an indefinite hunger strike,on Sunday alleged that they were manhandled by the policemen called in by the varsity administration. Jamia,however,said it had informed the police only about the presence of a student,who carries a campus ban,in the University. A group of 17 students from the Mass Communication department was debarred from writing exams on grounds of short attendance,and are on hunger strike since Saturday. Rajan Bhagat,Delhi Police pro,said: “Police were present only to prevent any untoward incident and did not resort to lathicharge.”

Ex-govt employee attempts suicide

NEW DELHI: A 70-year-old former government employee attempted suicide by jumping off the Moti Nagar flyover in West Delhi on Sunday afternoon,police said. Meher Chand Khurana had retired from the Weights and Measures department of the Union government twelve years ago. “Khurana jumped off the flyover around 3 pm. We are yet to ascertain the reason for the extreme step. He is at the Ganga Ram Hospital,” said V Renganathan,Additional CP (West).

Metro to promote use of smart cards

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro will set up special counters at 20 of its most-visited stations to promote the use of smart cards,a spokesman said on Sunday. The Contactless Smart Card,or the CSC,is a special ticket used for multiple journeys based on value available on it. During the drive from May 9 to May 15,customer relations assistants will brief travellers about advantages of using a smart card and how to procure one,the spokesman said.
