In 1995,it was the first international auction house to open office in India. Almost 20 years later,it will become the first international auction house to hold sales in India. Christies maiden auction in India will comprise Indian art and take place in Mumbai in the second half of December. The Indian art market is very sophisticated and the decision to hold auctions at this time is a reflection of the strong momentum in the domestic marketplace,the increased international appeal of Indian art and the growing participation of Indian collectors across international sale categories, says Menaka Kumari-Shah,Christies Head of India,adding that details of the artwork will be available in due time. Earlier this year,Christies supported the India Art Fair and also partnered with the British Council for Homelands,a touring exhibition of contemporary art. The auction is also in line with the global expansion of the auction house in 2005 Christies entered the Middle Eastern art scene by opening an office and holding the first international auction in the region in 2006. In 2013,it has also been granted license to hold independent sales in China.
