Gulfam also said Navjot’s wife informed him that she lives in Rajouri Garden, and asked him to inform her family about the accident. (Express Photo)Mohammad Gulfam, who rushed the Finance Ministry official and his wife to a private hospital after a BMW rammed into their motorcycle, claimed he was asked by the car driver to go to Neulife Hospital in Northwest Delhi’s GTB Nagar.
The crash killed Navjot Singh (57), a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Finance Ministry, and left his wife, Sandeep Kaur, injured. Sandeep is a teacher by profession.
On Sunday afternoon, Gulfam was driving his loading van through Dhaula Kuan when he spotted an overturned BMW that had hit a divider near the Delhi Cantonment Metro Station.
“I stopped my vehicle and got out to check. Two people were lying on the road, and others were making videos, but no one was coming forward to help,” Gulfam said.
“I told them to let me take the injured to the hospital. With help from a few commuters, I placed both the injured — a man and a woman — in my loading van,” he said.
He further said a woman got into the vehicle and sat in front and told him to drive towards Azadpur. “Madam told me to go towards Azadpur… she was talking on the phone with somebody,” he claimed.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Gulfam said he didn’t know at the time that the woman sitting with him was the one driving the BMW. “I thought she was among the victims,” he said.
Within half an hour, he reached the hospital. “Doctors immediately started treatment, but could not save the injured man,” said Gulfam.
Gulfam also said Navjot’s wife informed him that she lives in Rajouri Garden, and asked him to inform her family about the accident.
On Monday, Gulfam visited Navjot’s house and met his parents and son. Gulfam, who drives an Eeco van, lives in Aman Vihar.
The car was being driven by Gaganpreet Makkar (38), who was accompanied by her husband, Parikshit Kakkar, and two young children, police said.
“The duo — Gaganpreet and Parikshit — took Navjot and his injured wife to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, 19 km away. It is suspected that the hospital owner is known to them,” a police officer said.
Gaganpreet and her husband were also admitted there, the officer said.
After she was discharged on Monday afternoon, police said she was arrested and produced before a court, which sent her to judicial custody.
Police said she has been booked under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for tampering with evidence after the accident, among others.
