With her leg in a plaster cast owing to an injury, BJP’s West Delhi candidate Kamaljeet Sehrawat sat atop an orange truck and took part in a 7-km-long roadshow to file her nomination for the Lok Sabha polls Thursday.

Her convoy started from Dwarka Sector 19 to the Rajouri Garden DC office via Najafgarh road where she was joined by Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, and Delhi state president Virendra Sachdeva among other party leaders.

Taking a dig at the AAP-Congress alliance in the Capital, Sherawat said, “Two people who always fought with each other and now come together can never succeed because one minus one is zero… Last time, you contested against each other. Now you have formed an alliance… The CM (Arvind Kejriwal) who always spoke against parivarvaad is pushing his wife Sunita Kejriwal who has no experience in politics to lead campaigns and roadshows in his absence… jab vichardhara badalti hai, vishwas khatm ho jaata hai…”

She goes up against the INDIA bloc candidate Mahabal Mishra. She replaces incumbent BJP MP Parvesh Verma.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the 51-year-old said: “My constituency is very big both demographically and geographically. There are rural and urban areas as well as unauthorised colonies including JJ clusters. Urban areas like Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, Tilak Nagar and Rajouri Garden have better facilities… If I win, my priority will be construction of parks in every colony, sports facilities in villages, proper roads, water and sewer connections, and implementing the central schemes brought by PM Narendra Modi for women and youth.”

She said she would also move a proposal to the Delhi Metro to provide connectivity from Najafgarh to Nangloi.
Meanwhile, Mishra said: “In the 2020 Assembly polls, AAP won all 10 seats in this constituency. Together, we will sweep the BJP away.”

He added, “The… BJP has removed all six MPs this time…why? Because they have done nothing and people are angry… This time, the AAP, especially after the arrest of CM Arvind Kejriwal, is getting more sympathy and support from the public…”

Mishra said if he gets elected, his priority will be to build a college, hospitals, better transport to rural parts, and better roads and water.

Constituency at a glance

The West Delhi constituency was created in 2008 following de-limitation and is densely populated with several unauthorised colonies — mostly in Vikaspuri, Uttam Nagar, Dwarka, and Matiala — and villages. It has a 20-21% Jaat population, especially in the rural areas. Besides there are 19% Purvanchalis, 13% SCs, and about 23% Punjabis and Sikhs. Hari Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Vikaspuri and Janakpuri have major presence of Punjabi and Sikh populations.
Residents, meanwhile, had mixed responses to work done in the constituency by the parties.

Jaishankar, 40, a cobbler who was stitching shoes under a tree in Vikas Nagar, near the Najafgarh nala, said, “Yahan ki halat toh aap dekh rahe hai… sadak kharab, namak ka pani or kooda hi kooda… who should I vote for…” He added that the BJP MP never visited this area.

“AAP has done a lot of work… it gives free electricity and has developed government schools… but I support Modi ji,” said Naresh Goyal, owner of a shop in Vikaspuri M block market.
