Following the BJP’s decisive victory in the recently-concluded assembly elections, its newly-elected 48 legislators are expected to meet on that day to decide on a face to replace the outgoing Chief Minister Atishi.
Initially scheduled for Monday, the BJP Legislature Party meeting was postponed, with sources now confirming that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister will take place on February 20 instead of February 18. The national leadership of the BJP will send observers to oversee the legislative meeting and facilitate the selection process.
“The BJP Legislature Party meeting scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed. Now this meeting will be held on February 19. The swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister will also be held on February 20 instead of February 18,” a senior BJP leader was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and the caretaker CM Atishi criticised the BJP over the delay in selecting a Chief Minister. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Atishi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not trust any of the 48 new BJP MLAs in Delhi.
“It is February 17th, it is ten days since the results of Delhi elections came, people expected them to announce their CM candidate on February 9th, and the government will be formed in February 10th… Till now, there is no decision on Delhi CM. It has become clear that the BJP doesn’t have a CM candidate. It has also become clear that PM Modi has no faith in 48 elected MLAs,” she stated.
The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP managed to win 22.
