(Express file/ Representational Photo)Three Bangladeshi nationals have been sentenced to five-year imprisonment by a special court in Mumbai in an infiltration and fake documents case, the National Investigation Agency said on Wednesday.
“Mohammed Habibur Rehman Habib alias Raj Jesub Mandal, Hannan Anwar Hussain Khan alias Hannan Baburali Gazi, and Mohd Azarali Subhanallah alias Raja Jesub Mandal have been convicted and sentenced to five years in jail, along with Rs 2,000 fine on each person,” an NIA spokesperson said in a statement.
The case originated from an FIR registered by the Pune police in March 2018 on basis of inputs that several Bangladeshi nationals were staying in Pune without valid documents and aiding members of ABT, a front organisation for proscribed terror outfit Al Qaida.
According to the NIA, it filed a chargesheet against the three men under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on September 7, 2018. Two others, identified as Mohd Ripen Hossain alias Rubel, and Mohammad Hasan Ali were chargesheeted under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 471 (fraud) and section 14 of the Foreigners Act 1946.
“All five were eventually convicted and sentenced under IPC and Foreigners Act. Ripen Hossain and Mohammad Hasan Ali were convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment each under the IPC and the Foreigners Act last year in October 2023 after they had pleaded guilty,” the NIA spokesperson said.
On Wednesday, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha that the NIA has registered 640 cases since its inception.
“Till December 5 this year, there were 109 cases under active investigation and 395 under further investigation. 505 cases have been chargesheeted. 4,174 accused have been arrested so far by the NIA and 595 have been convicted. Out of a total of 147 decided cases, 140 have ended in conviction. The conviction rate of NIA-investigated cases is 95.23 per cent,” he said, adding that the NIA has seized or attached 543 movable and immovable properties worth Rs 109.6 crore under the UAPA.
