ATM thieves almost pulled off heist,a missing tool let them down: Police

From choosing the ATM booth that they were going to rob and the time to carry out their operation,to disconnecting the CCTV camera inside the booth, their heist plan was almost executed to perfection.

From choosing the ATM booth that they were going to rob and the time to carry out their operation,to disconnecting the CCTV camera inside the booth, their heist plan was almost executed to perfection.

However, the only thing they did not have was, quite literally, the tools of the trade. And that is why their plan failed.

The Sarita Vihar police station on Sunday received a complaint from the branch manager of SBI,Sarita Vihar,Southeast Delhi, stating that their ATM had been damaged and that there was a theft attempt in the booth. The manager said the accused barged into the booth, managed to unscrew the machine and damaged it. However, they were not able to steal any money. The incident took place around 2 am on Sunday.

A senior police officer said the robbers cut the wires of the CCTV camera inside the booth to carry out their operation. “The CCTV was functional the night before. The guard deployed outside the booth was reportedly sleeping at the time of the incident. When we went to check the booth, the upper portion of the machine was unscrewed and the money bag damaged. The accused did not have the tools to break open the money bag,” the officer said.

Police have registered a case against the unidentified accused and are investigating the matter. “We are questioning the guard, who was fast asleep while on duty. There are some vendors who serve food till late night in the area, who are also being questioned. There are no CCTV cameras in the rest of the area. We have constituted a team to investigate the matter,” a senior police officer said.
