Delhi on Monday recorded the highest maximum temperature so far this season at 41.3 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius — both around three degrees above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The day’s high went past 40 degrees Celsius, not just at the Safdarjung weather station, which is representative of the Capital, but also at other weather stations. At Ridge, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.9 degrees Celsius. The weather stations at Palam (41.1 degrees Celsius), Ayanagar (40.9 degrees Celsius), and Lodhi Road (40.6 degrees Celsius) were among others where the maximum temperature crossed the 40 degree-mark.
Last year, the highest temperature in April settled at 40.5 degrees Celsius, while it was 40.6 degrees Celsius in 2023.
Delhi recorded a heatwave between April 7 and 9 this month, as per the IMD. The Met Office, in its seasonal outlook, had earlier forecast less rain and a higher than usual number of heatwave days. A heatwave day is registered when the day’s high for at least two weather stations touches or crosses 40 degrees Celsius with a departure of 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius from normal temperature for at least two days in a row.
According to the IMD data since 2011, one, four, and eleven heatwave days were recorded in April in 2016, 2017 and 2022, respectively.
As per the forecast for the week, “mainly clear sky” is forecast till Friday. However, windy days are expected till Wednesday with strong surface winds reaching up to 20 kmph. There are no heatwave conditions forecast this week, said the IMD.
However, according to a statement by the IMD on Monday, heatwave conditions are forecast till Friday over Central India and also in South Uttar Pradesh, South Haryana, Rajasthan, and South Punjab between Tuesday and Saturday.
The minimum temperature is forecast to hover around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius till Thursday and gradually increase to up to 27 degrees Celsius by the weekend. Similarly, the daytime temperatures are also forecast to see a gradual increase from around 39 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday (brought down due to wind conditions) to around 41 degrees Celsius till Sunday.
