A PART of Ashoka Road caved in near Andhra Bhavan during the peak hour on Monday morning. An abandoned sewage pipe underneath had led to seepage and loosened the earth below the stretch, leading to a 15-foot crater.

NDMC WORKERS immediately reached the spot and levelled the road with soil in about 90 minutes. “They have also repaired the sewage pipe,” said NDMC spokesperson Anand Tiwari. However, the road has not been tarred and vehicles are not being allowed on the spot. “Roads usually cave in due to new work. However, this is a different case altogether,” added Tiwari.

ON AUGUST 8,a road near Khan Market developed a pothole. When NDMC officials went to the spot, more of the road gave way. It was found that an old underground pipe had broken, causing the cave-in. However, the NDMC said it has no plans to check other roads.
