Neela Hauz bridge opens to traffic
The Neela Hauz bridge,which connects Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj area to the Outer Ring Road,was inaugurated on Tuesday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The controversial bridge was built by filling up part of an ancient lake,the Neela Hauz,in Vasant Kunj. Residents presented a memorandum to Dikshit,asking the government to pledge a total removal of malba from the lake in the next three weeks. The work on this flyover was started in May,2008.

Admission denial: Govt,schools told to file reply
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought explanations from the state government and a few of its schools on why admissions were denied to eight girl students in different cases. Issuing notices to the government and the schools,Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw sought their responses by August 5. Through advocate Ashok Agrawal,the students had approached the court alleging the schools had denied admission “in violation of the Right To Education Act”.

Two constables face extortion charges
A dhaba-owner levelled allegations of extortion against two policemen on Tuesday. Usman,a resident of Sangam Vihar,alleged two constables from the Neb Sarai police station came to his dhaba and demanded money fom him. The police,meanwhile,said the constables,Praveen and Mukesh,were chasing snatchers and went into Usman’s shop to search for him. They found a pistol and ammunition inside and sought an explanation from Usman. A case under the Arms Act was lodged at the Neb Sarai station. Usman’s claims are being verified.
