Official risked life to save mentally ill man
Over a week after Newsline carried a photo showing police personnel at the New Delhi railway station tying a mentally unstable man to a pole on the platform for his own safety,a Northern Railway spokesperson said an inquiry was conducted in the incident. The spokesperson added: The official who tried to save the man risked his own life by climbing atop an engine,which is close to an overhead electric line. The official should be praised for his effort. When asked why the man had to be chained on the platform and was not escorted out of the station instead,the spokesperson maintained that he was handed over to the Government Railway Police.
Clean chit to DJB officials in gang-rape case
The Delhi Police on Wednesday filed a probe report in a Delhi court in the alleged case of gang-rape of a private firms executive contracted by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) four years ago. The accused were given a clean chit due to lack of evidence. The accused,Sarat Chander,Praveen Bhargava and Ramesh Thakur,are senior officials with the DJB. The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistate has fixed the matter for further hearing on August 2. The court said the petitioner can file an appeal against the closure report.
Two held for spate of snatchings in Bhogal
The police arrested two youths for their alleged involvement in a series of snatching cases,thereby claiming to have solved at least 20 cases. The arrested were identified as Rajesh Chawla (20) and Manjinder Singh (21). They were arrested on May 30 from Bhogal.
Both the accused were experts in doing motorcycle stunts, said a senior police official. They used to target women travelling in autos who generally keep bags on the seats.
Board for relocation of slum dwellers soon
Two months after the Delhi Assembly approved the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Bill,the Delhi High Court was informed on Wednesday that a board to frame the policies relating to the relocation of the slum-dwellers will be formed soon. Asked to submit its response in a case relating to rehabilitation of slum dwellers,the Slums and JJ department of the MCD told a Division Bench,headed by Justice S K Kaul,that the entire issue of relocation will also be looked into by the Board. The Board will have the Chief Minister as its chairperson.
Shelters for mentally ill: Three locations selected
After facing the ire of the Delhi High Court,the Delhi Development Authority on Wednesday filed an affidavit stating it had zeroed in on three places in the Capital for constructing shelters for mentally ill people found abandoned on the streets. The civic body,which has to build seven such shelters in the Capital,has earmarked Narela,Dwarka and Rohini. The courts observation came after a petition referred to the plight of former model Gitanjali Nagpal,who was found begging on the streets of the Capital.
Hospital negligence led to hearing loss: HC
In an interim order,the Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi government to bear the medical expenses for the ear surgery of a 10-year-old boy who lost his hearing ability following an injection administered to him at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in 2006. Justice S Muralidhar referred Arif to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for a cochlear replacement surgery and directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to ensure the costs were borne. The courts directive came on a petition filed by Arif through his father in 2006.
