84 riots: Court adjourns pleas
A Delhi court today adjourned to Thursday the hearing on the bail application of six persons chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases. Special CBI Judge P S Teji adjourned the matter after CBI’s special prosecutor Y K Saxena submitted that he has yet to go through the bail applications and the case files. The court was to hear arguments on the anticipatory bail applications of Peru,Mahendra Yadav,Brahmanand Gupta,
Balwant Khokhar,Krishna Khokhar and Ved Prakash.
The court also asked the counsel for the accused to file the other applications relating to bail by Wednesday so that further hearing could be conducted smoothly.
Uphaar: Court refers report to district judge
A Delhi court referred the matter on taking cognizance of a probe report,giving clean chit to former IPS officer Amod Kanth in the 1997 Uphaar fire case to a district judge,saying it was to be decided by a Metropolitan Magistrate. District and Sessions Judge S P Garg on Tuesday sent the case file to district Judge Gurdeep Kumar after holding hearings on the closure report as well as protest petition of the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy. The matter is now to be taken up by Gurdeep Kumar on February 15.
Man held for firing outside hotel near PM residence
A man was arrested for allegedly opening fire near a five-star hotel,barely 500 metres from Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs residence,12 days ago. The accused has been identified as Chintu Dhingra,DCP (New Delhi) Shankar Dass said. He was caught on Monday from Kingsway Camp in North Delhi. Sources said Dhingra allegedly opened fire after an altercation with a security guard of Hotel Ashok in the early hours of January 28.
Two get life imprisonment for murder
A Delhi court sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for killing one Richpal relying upon the statement of a freelance journalist who had seen the convicts assaulting the victim. Additional Sessions Judge Poonam Choudhary also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 each on Vikas,25,and Suresh,50,after holding them guilty of murder.
Service disrupted on Metro Line-2 for an hour
Metro train services were disrupted for over an hour after a tree fell on the over-head electrification (OHE) line near Chhatrasal Stadium. The train services were affected between Jahangirpuri and Vishwavidyalaya Metro Stations on Line-2 (Central Sectt-Jahangirpuri) from 9.11 am to 10.21 am.
Four thieves held
Four persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in at least four cases of theft in temples across the city. According to the police,Mahender Singh (27),Kulwant alias Kale (25),Kulwant alias Gole (22) and receiver Charanjit Singh were arrested on Monday by a team of the Delhi Polices Crime Branch. The trio was allegedly involved in the theft at Sanatan Dharma temple in Surajmal Vihar,Ashok Vihar,on January 3 when they decamped with Rs 40,000 cash and silver jewellery after beating up the priest. They also allegedly burgled a temple in Mandavli in December last year,a gurudwara in Adarsh Nagar and Sai Baba Mandir in Bara Hindu Rao area on January 30. Police officers reportedly recovered six silver crowns,12 silver umbrellas and a LCD TV from them.
Chain snatchers arrested
Noida: The Noida police arrested two mobile and chain snatchers on Monday who were involved in around 50 cases of mobile and chain snatching. According to the police,the looters were nabbed during checking. The police have recovered 35 mobile phones,one countrymade pistol and a bullet,along with a Pulsar motorcycle and Rs 2,600 from the looters. The looters are Arvind Kumar Gupta,resident of Aligarh residing in Sector-20,Noida,and Ajeet,a resident of Gorakhpur currently residing in Ghaziabad, said Ashok Kumar Singh,SSP,Gautam Budhha Nagar.
Auto-lifter gang busted
The South Delhi police arrested two persons and claimed to have busted a gang of auto-lifters. With their arrest,five cases of motor vehicle theft have been solved and three motorcycles and one scooter have been recovered. The accused have been identified as Ajay Kumar (26) and Jitender Bom (27).
