SC on Arushi case
The Supreme Court on Monday considered evolving norms for media coverage of sensitive criminal cases like the Arushi murder case in a bid to protect the right of privacy and reputation of affected persons. These are issues that require in-depth consideration, a Bench comprising Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph said and posted the matter for hearing on April 7. The court was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Surat Singh.
Contract killer held
The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a contract killer,Sheelu Jat,carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 and claimed to have solved a number of cases. The police said a loaded countrymade pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from Jat,who was arrested from near the Metro station in New Ashok Nagar.
Airport contract
Delhi International Airport Ltd has signed a contract with Celebi Hava Servisi AS of Turkey to upgrade,modernise,finance,operate and manage the existing 70,000-square metres cargo terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Celebi Holding,a major player in the Turkish airport ground handling and cargo operations,on Monday said it plans invest $100 million in India after bagging contracts for the airports in Delhi and Mumbai.
Constable injured
NOIDA: A head constable of the Noida police was injured while chasing three alleged criminals on Monday. The police said three men on a motorcycle fled from a checkpost in Sector 19,and head constable Richpal Singh gave them a chase. We reached Sector 26 near Kalibari Marg,when they hit my motorcycle, Singh said. The cop,posted at the Sector 18 police station,suffered minor injuries and is admitted at Kailash Hospital.
Thieves arrested
With the arrest of three men,the police claim to have busted a gang of mobile phones and laptop thieves. The police said 25 mobile phones,12 laptops and a digital camera have been recovered from the trio. The police said the three would enter houses on the pretext of collecting money for religious purposes. They have been identified as Bhag Singh,20,Gurmukh Singh,19,and Rohit Mehra,22.
Two held for murder
The police on Monday claimed to have arrested two youths for allegedly bludgeoning a man,Deepak Mandal,when he tried to resist their robbery attempt a week ago in Model Town. One of the accused,Amit (27),is a Nepal national. He was arrested,along with Ajay (22) on Sunday from near Nanak Paio Gurudwara on GT Karnal Road,the police said.
Revise media guidelines
The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the city police not to release the confessional statement of an accused to the media in a criminal case before filing the chargesheet. Directing the police to amend its draft guidelines over police-media interaction,the court also suggested the police should not to allow the media to photograph the accused soon after the arrest. The Bench also asked the police to restrain itself from giving any opinion about the accused person. The PIL in the matter has been filed by NGO Act Now for Harmony and Democracy.
