Smokers to be fined
Delhi University on Thursday announced that the nodal officers of its Smokefree Initiative will be empowered to levy a fine of Rs 200 on the violators of its anti-smoking law. The initiative,run in partnership with the World Lung Foundation,South Asia,will also add three Tobacco Cessation Centres to its network.

Haryana hikes VAT
Chandigarh: The Haryana Cabinet has decided to raise rate of value added tax (VAT) on certain commodities from four per cent to five per cent. It will result in additional revenue mobilisation of about Rs 300 crore per annum. The Cabinet,which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday,decided the rate of tax on goods listed in Schedule C of the Haryana VAT Act from Entry No 1 to 101 — Entry 102 of industrial inputs and packing materials shall remain unchanged — would be increased.

A community of artists,writers,academicians and cultural artists has said they “support the stand taken by Shah Rukh Khan in facing up to the recent threats against him by the Shiv Sena”. “We salute the courage displayed by Shah Rukh in standing up to these threats. He should know that the entire creative community stands by him and is willing to protect his right to have his films screened anywhere if the government is unwilling to ensure this,” said a member of Sahmat,the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust.

Help ‘tortured’
Sarojini Nagar police have registered a case against a Railways officer and his wife for allegedly torturing their 16-year-old domestic help. The couple allegedly locked the girl in their bathroom. Police said the case was registered on Tuesday after an NGO approached the Juvenile Justice Board with the girl’s complaint.

Woman arrested
A “live-in partner” of a man who is in judicial custody under MCOCA was arrested from Central Delhi on Wednesday for allegedly impersonating his wife and threatening witnesses in the case. Police said Shonika Chopra impersonated as Sangeeta,the former wife of the accused who goes by the name Judge Chawla. He was arrested in November last year for his alleged involvement in a series of land-grabbing cases.

1 killed as armed robbers loot train
A 32-YEAR-man was killed while trying to resist armed robbers aboard a local train in Ghaziabad on Wednesday night. Police said four men boarded an EMU train plying between Ghaziabad and Palwal via Delhi from the Sahibabad railway station and threatened the passengers who were present in the compartment. “They snatched mobile phones,cash,jewellery and wristwatches from the passengers,” Hemant Kumar Mishra,circle officer,Railway Police,said. He identified the deceased as Sanjay Kumar.

Proclaimed offender held for cheating
A 42-year-old ‘proclaimed offender’,wanted in a case in Chandigarh,was arrested in Northwest Delhi’s Mahendra Park. The police identified the accused as Sudeep Singh Sabharwal. Sabharwal and 10 other directors of J S Jewellers Private Limited in Chandigarh had allegedly put advertisements in newspapers for the sale of flats and cheated about 50 people. After he went absconding,a case was registered against him and he was declared proclaimed offender by a city court.

Demarcate spots for feeding strays: HC
The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Animal Welfare Board of India to earmark within six weeks sites for feeding stray dogs in some select localities on an experimental basis. The Board was directed to start the pilot project in six places of South Delhi,including Vasant Kunj,Saket and Nizamuddin.

Post water timings on website,DJB told
The Central Information Commission (CIC) has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to post timings of water supply on its website by February 28 and keep updating it in case of changes. “The Commission directs the Public Information Officer to ensure that the timings of water supply of all areas are displayed on the website of the Delhi Jal Board,” the directive said.

Now,DTC officials to ride buses
In an effort to improve services offered by the Delhi Transport Corporation,the agency has decided that on every second Monday of the month,officers shall use DTC buses instead of office cars. “The decision has been taken to ensure the staff and officers are aware of the troubles faced by daily commuters,” said a DTC spokeperson.

Govt mulls taking minibuses off roads
After the mishap on Wednesday in which a minibus overturned killing three and injuring 22,the government is now contemplating taking these buses off the city’s roads. Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said he has already instructed the Transport department to look into the matter.
