Apex court seeks AIIMS response on admission

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has sought an explanation from the Director and Dean of AIIMS for not complying with an order to grant admission to a student in a post-graduate course. A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi objected to the decision of the AIIMS authorities to deny admission to an eligible candidate to favour another. The bench asked the authorities to file its response and fixed the matter for further hearing on July 22. The court passed the order on a petition filed by Dr Varun Agrawal,now working in the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS,challenging the administration’s decision to not granting him admission,which was earlier directed by the court.

NEW DELHI: The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has arrested four women from Uzbekistan for their alleged involvement in a prostitution racket in the Capital. Investigating officers zeroed in on the gang and arrested them from South Delhi on Monday evening by tracing them through a newspaper advertisement.

Centre files anti-junk food affidavit in HC

NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry has filed an affidavit in the High Court,favouring a ban on sale of junk food and soft drinks in and around educational institutions. The affidavit stated that the chief ministers and the health ministers of all the states have been told to consider issuing instructions to the vice-chancellor of all universities,directing them to withdraw of junk foods and carbonated drinks from canteens of educational institutions. The court will take it up on the next date of hearing.
