Teenager immolates self,dies
15-year-old mentally disturbed boy allegedly set himself on fire in a park in South Delhi on Thursday,the police said. P Sumit Kumar,a resident of RK Puram Sector-IV,went to a park in Sector-II,poured kerosene oil and set himself ablaze at 1.30 pm. He was rushed to Safdurjung Hospital with 90 per cent burns,where he succumbed to injuries. Kumar’s family said he was mentally disturbed and also depressed for some time. The body has been sent for postmortem.

Wanted criminal shot dead
Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police shot dead a wanted criminal in Moradnagar area on Thursday. Police officials said Bhupinder alias Bunty was wanted for the murder of Khurramnagar’s village chief,Rinku Tyagi,who was killed on March 1 last year. Bunty,35,was also wanted for the murder of Meerut’s gram panchayat member,Satpal. Police officials said Bunty,who carried a reward of Rs 5,000 on his arrest,was the sharpshooter of Udham Singh gang. Police said Bunty was killed in crossfire that ensued after he was apprehended near the ordnance factory.

Judicial custody of IM member extended
The Tis Hazari Court on Thursday extended the judicial custody of Shahzad,an alleged member of the Indian Mujahideen,who was involved in the September 2008 serial blasts in Delhi. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja extended the judicial custody by 14 days till March 18. Shahzad,who was arrested from Azamgarh by the Anti-Terror Squad on February 1,is also an accused in the Batla House encounter case in which Mohan Chand Sharma,a Delhi police inspector,was killed.

Woman shot dead in Ghaziabad
GHAZIABAD: A 46-year-old woman was shot dead in Nandgram area of Ghaziabad on Tuesday night. Police officials said Kusum was shot dead by two men outside her house in a slum cluster around 11 pm on Tuesday. Police officials identified the two men as Aslam and his father Babu Khan. Aslam,police said,had allegedly eloped with the victim’s daughter,following which she had filed an abduction complaint against him. Acting on the complaint,the police arrested Aslam’s aunt. Irked over this,the two shot dead Kusum on Tuesday,police said. The two are absconding.

Man shot at,friend injured in Greater Noida
Greater Noida: Two persons were attacked and one of them shot at in Greater Noida on Wednesday night. Ram Krishan Goyal,a 55-year-old farmer,and his friend Rakesh were returning to their homes in Gharbhara village of Kasna when two motorcycle-borne assailants — residents of the same village — shot at Goyal. The victim’s car turned turtle and Rakesh was also injured. Goyal fell unconscious while Rakesh stopped a passerby and called his family members. The injured persons were admitted in Kailash hospital. The police are yet to register the case.

Man charged with culpable homicide acquitted
Acquitting a man of the charges of culpable homicide,the Delhi High Court on Thursday asked him to pay Rs 3.5 lakh compensation to the relatives of a person who had died due to a gun shot he fired during a wedding. Mukesh Kumar Gupta,a business man,was accused of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Burglary at lawyer’s chamber: three arrested
With the arrest of three persons,the police claim to have solved the Rs 14.2 lakh robbery case reported from the lawyer’s chambers of a city court complex on February 23. The accused were identified as Ramji Lal (30),Sudhir Kumar (47) and Munesh Kumar Gupta (49). Kumar,a tea vendor,runs his shop on the fourth floor of lawyer’s chambers in Karkardooma court. Gupta,a clerk,has been working in the court for last several years,police said. Police officials said Rs 1.97 lakh in cash,a car and a scooter purchased with the stolen money were recovered from them.

DU teachers on strike today
The Executive Council of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) has issued an ultimatum to VC Deepak Pental on the implementation of the semester system at the undergraduate level. “We have demanded that the proposal be withdrawn by March 15 else we will sit on a hunger strike,” said Academic Council member Abha Dev Habib. The EC has also decided to hold a strike on Friday protesting the decision of the chemistry department not to convene the statutory syllabus-making bodies.

Tech varsity suspends students’ union president
The Delhi Technological University on Thursday suspended the president of its students’ association for protesting on campus. Ravishekhar was suspended along with another student,Nitin Baraiya,for protesting against the conversion of the Delhi College of Engineering to the Delhi Technological University. A university spokesperson said the students should have met officials with their grievance before protesting in public.
