DUTA burns effigy of V-C Pental,to protest
The Delhi University Teachers Association on Tuesday described Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental as a total failure and demonstrated against him to mark the end of his term. Prof Pental has harmed the university through his arbitrary,autocratic and insincere conduct,DUTA members said as they marched to Pentals office where they burnt his effigy. The DUTA also announced an elaborate plan of continued protests over the next fortnight,including a total strike on September 7,8 and 9,a demonstration on September 13 until September 17 when the general body will meet again to decide the future course of action.
Dalit woman gangraped by two
A 22-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by two persons in Greater Noidas Jewar area on Monday night. According to the police,the two accused reportedly belong to the Thakur community and had barged into the victims parents house on Monday night while she was alone and allegedly raped her. A case has been registered at Jewar police station. The victim had come to her brothers house in Jewar on Raksha Bandhan.
PCR van catches fire,2 cops escape unhurt
An Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Head Constable of the Delhi Police had a narrow escape when the PCR van they were in caught fire in Paharganj area on Tuesday morning. The police said the incident occurred at 8.30 am on the Paharganj flyover. The police said the fire originated from the front portion of the vehicle due to a short circuit. A fire tender was rushed to douse the blaze. The police said they have ordered an inquiry. This is the second incident of a city PCR van catching fire in the last month.
No new equipment for Games camp: MCD
The MCD has decided to use medical equipment already available at its own hospitals for two Games health camps rather than buying them as suggested by the government. Last week,some members wrote to the Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra to stop the purchase of equipment worth Rs 2 crore claiming the budget was inflated. The MCD will set up a medical camp at the Delhi University Rugby stadium and at Hindu College during the Games.
Illegal assets: Kin to be tried,says HC
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday said the criminal cases cannot be closed with the death of the accused and the family members who benefited from the illegal wealth could be put to trial. Justice S N Dhingra passed the order on a petition filed by a son of deceased government officer whereby he sought quashing of criminal proceedings on the ground that he cannot be prosecuted for the alleged crime committed by his father. The court observed he can be tried for the offence of abetment as there was evidence that he benefited from the illegal wealth.
HC notices to Centre,Delhi on 84 riots case
The Delhi High Court has sought a response from the Centre as well as the Delhi government by October 20 on a petition filed by a woman who lost her son in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots,seeking Rs 7 lakh compensation for her loss. The petition was filed by Ratan Kaur,who claimed her son killed by a mob during the riots.
