held for raping minor
A 65-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in West Delhi. The incident was reported on Wednesday afternoon. The accused,Hari Lal,runs a shop on the ground floor of his residence in Vipin Garden,Uttam Nagar. The little girl went to his shop to buy toffees. He took her inside the shop,raped her and threatened to kill her if she told about the incident to anybody, a police officer said. The girl later informed her mother,who then took her to Uttam Nagar police station. After medical examination confirmed the rape,a case was registered against the accused.
Plea against Maneka dismissed
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition that sought contempt of court action against former Union minister Maneka Gandhi for writing a newspaper article during the pendency of a case. Following her affidavit and an apology,the court noted Gandhi was under a bonafide impression that since the suit that had been pending for over five years,it must have been decided when she wrote the article. Terming it a mistake,the court disposed of the petition.
2 held for posing as IAS officers
A couple was arrested in Outer Delhi on charges of posing as Indian Administrative Service officers and attempting to dupe the American Express credit card company. The two were identified as Manoj Kumar Shastri (32) and Madhu Singh (44). Police said Shastri had claimed he was Sanjay Dubey and was posted with the Ministry of Personnel,Public Grievances and Pension. He had introduced Madhu as his personal secretary and an IAS officer. The company filed a complaint on the suspicion that their claims for credit cards were not genuine. The police later found Shastri worked with the Delhi Vidyut Board as a junior engineer but was not satisfied with his job and wanted to make more money. Police officials said that this was the second time that Shastri attempted to cheat the bank. Police said Shastri had also formed two fake companies and duped engineering students.
Woman dies at airport
A 76-year-old woman,Geeta Ganguly,died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the check-in counter at the domestic terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday. She was taken to the medical centre run by Apollo but declared dead on arrival. Police said Ganguly was to board an Indigo flight to Kolkata with her son but the airline refused her on board due to her condition.
Student commits suicide
A Class XII student allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday evening days before her results were to be announced. The incident was reported from Southeast Delhis Sunlight Colony. Sweta Kapoor,17,was a student of a government school and had taken her exams recently. According to her parents,she was depressed about the upcoming results. She was found hanging in her room, a senior police officer said. No suicide note was found.
MCD gets notice on bad toilets
The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a contempt notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhis sanitation officer for not improving the conditions of public toilets ahead of the Commonwealth Games despite the agency’s assurance. The court issued the notice to Anil Prakash,seeking a reply by August 27. The directive came after the Central Pollution Control Board’s report stated that while condition of public toilets in NDMC area had improved,the same in MCD area had worsened.
