New Delhi: The Delhi government,on Wednesday,told the High Court that they have started renovating 400 schools to strengthen their infrastructure and prevent another mishap like the 2009 Khajoori Khas school stampede. The court,noting the submission,has now sought an affidavit from the government with details about the nature of work it would carry out to prevent mishaps in schools. Five girls were killed in the stampede,which had occurred while they were moving up and down a narrow staircase,on September 10,2009.

Court turns down plea to amend civic law

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court,on Wednesday,refused to entertain a PIL seeking amendment in the civic law dealing with nomination of two members to the NDMC,stating that it cannot take up the work of legislature and “re-cast” the law. “We cannot legislate and recast the existing law and the prayer seeking to amend the New Delhi Municipal Council Act,1994,” the court held. It was hearing a PIL by the Indian Council of Legal Aid and Advice (ICLAA),a lawyers’ organisation,seeking amendment in Section 4 of the Act.

Rs 4,000 from Satish Chaddha,a resident of Rohini,while he was purchasing a ticket in a bus plying from Saibaba Chowk to Karol Bagh. “When the vehicle halted at a bus stop and the accused got off,Chaddha also alighted and started chasing them,” Chhaya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer),said. A beat constable who was standing near Saibaba Chowk,identified as Harish,managed to apprehend one of the accused,Kirpal Singh (21).
