A Delhi Police constable,Kushal Pal,on Saturday arrested an armed snatcher even as he threatened to shoot the policeman.
Pal arrested the desperate snatcher,Rajesh Kumar,after chasing his motorcycle for a distance of around two kilometres. Kumars accomplice,who was riding pillion,managed to escape,the police said.
The police said Constable Pal was patrolling in Chander Nagar area,Jagatpuri,when he heard cries of chor,chor (thief,thief). Two men on a black Pulsar motorcycle went past him at a very high speed,which alerted the policeman.
Deputy Commissioner of police (East) K C Dwivedi said,Pal immediately mounted his private motorcycle and started chasing them. Near Ram Nagar Extension,he rammed his motorcycle into the bike of the accused,forcing them to a stop.
Pal seized the pillion rider by his collar; meanwhile,Kumar took out a loaded .315 countrymade pistol and pointed it at Pals chest.
Undeterred,Pal let go of the pillion rider and caught the hand of the other accused and snatched the pistol,the police said. Taking advantage of the situation the pillion rider fled on foot. Pal then called for help and placed the Kumar under arrest,the police said.
According to the police,Kumar has revealed that he and his friend are involved in many cases of snatching.
Officers said such encounters are not new for Constable Pal. He has also earned many commendation certificates for his bravery.
In 2001,while posted at Civil Lines,Pal played a pivotal role in arresting one Ghanshyam who had killed a sub-inspector Vinod Kumar Yadav. He was also declared best beat constable of Kashmere Gate police station when posted there.
