Perhaps spurred on by the memory of her early defeat last week in the quarter-finals,top seed Ankita Bhambri put in a dominant display in her first match this week in the $10,000 ITF women’s circuit tournament at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi. Three games was all she conceded in the first set against Sagarika Phadke, and in the second, she didn’t allow her opponent from Mumbai to even register on the scoreboard as the Delhi player completed a 6-3 6-0 victory with ease. In the second round, she will play Treta Bhattacharya for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ankita’s conqueror last week, eighth seed Ying-ying Duan of China, also made it into round two after she took out Japan’s Moe Kawatoko 7-5 6-3. Seventh seed Parul Goswami, though, couldn’t provide much of a challenge to Korea’s Seo-kyung Kang. The Delhi player, who was part of the victorious state tennis team at the 2007 National Games, won just five games as she slumped to a 6-3 6-2 loss. Wild card Adnya Naik’s match against China’s Chun-yan He seemed to end just a while after it began — she was dealt a double bagel by her 773rd ranked opponent. Sweta-Kumari Solanki managed to put up a fight in the second set of her match against Austrian Natasha Bredl, but couldn’t do much more as she was defeated 6-3 7-5.
