All Sunday,it was party time at counting centres

Confident of victory,AAP supporters came with drums and bugles.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters swarmed outside the Commonwealth Games (CWG) centre much before counting began at 8 am on Sunday. As the day progressed, the numbers swelled while Congress workers were nowhere to be seen.

Confident of victory,AAP supporters came with drums and bugles. “Our rivals had said they don’t know who Arvind Kejriwal is. They called us amateurs. What do they have to say now?” Bhaskar,an AAP supporter, said.

The results at the CWG counting centre were in line with expectations. While Krishna Nagar and Vishwas Nagar were taken by BJP,Trilokpuri and Patparganj were won by AAP.

BJP CM candidate Harsh Vardhan’s victory from Krishna Nagar became clear in Round 3 of counting with the BJP leading with 11,271 votes against Congress’ 5,288 votes and AAP’s 3,412 votes. In the final round,BJP got 69,222 votes against Congress’ 26,072 and AAP’s 17,498.

See-saw till the end

A group of young men carrying drums and Congress flags had gathered outside the counting centre at Gole Market. But by 5 pm,the flags had been wrapped up and they prepared to leave. In contrast,AAP supporters shouted slogans as the results trickled in. The AAP won five of the seven seats whose results were announced at the centre.

For the RK Puram seat,AAP’s Shazia Ilmi and BJP’s Anil Kumar Sharma kept everybody guessing with the difference in votes polled as less as 37 between them. In the end,Ilmi lost by 326 votes. Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Singh, who reached the counting centre at 7.30 am,came third.

The counting for New Delhi, won by AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, was also done at this centre. Social Welfare Minister Kiran Walia arrived at the centre early, confident of retaining the seat she had held for 10 years. AAP’s Somnath Bharti won there.

Counting of votes for eight constituencies was done at the counting centre in Dwarka’s Sector 3. As counting started, candidates brought out calculators. With each calculation, their expressions changed. Nervous, one drank an entire bottle of water. At the media centre, food and snacks were distributed.

“Yes,I am losing. This was a wave… I got swept away. But I will always be grateful to the Congress for giving me a seat,” she said.
