After the highs,VJCA crash land

Finishing second in the 2008 Lala Raghubir Singh memorial cricket tournament was one of Vidya Jain Cricket Academy’s highs in recent years.

Finishing second in the 2008 Lala Raghubir Singh memorial cricket tournament was one of Vidya Jain Cricket Academy’s highs in recent years. This season, though, they first lost their way, then their heads, and what awaits now is rather unceremonious — they will not participate next year.

The organisers have declined the team an invitation for the next edition as part of disciplinary action against captain Naresh Jain, who abused umpire Anil Mathur after their match against AIPS. “It all started when the umpire gave one of their batsmen (Sanjay Verma) out caught. He wasn’t sure at first and gave his decision after consulting the square-leg umpire. VJCA lost the match and the umpire reported it to us later,” said an official.

While Mathur refused to comment,Jain himself admitted to having abused the umpire in the heat of the moment. But he reasserted biased umpiring that curtailed their progress this year.

“I wouldn’t say I didn’t abuse him,but we were too disappointed with his decisions. He denied us clearly on three occasions before adjudging Sanjay (Verma) out. At first he didn’t give him out and consulted the leg umpire,” Jain said, adding,“We were surprised to see him raise the finger as even the leg umpire wasn’t sure. Needing 37 runs for victory with five wickets in hand, the decision turned the match. After the dismissal, they ran through our order. Worse,we had to see Collage Group — whom we had beaten — go through. We fell short by 2 runs.

“The ban is not going to affect me much. At 43,I just play it for fun. Nothing is going to happen to me but the boys will certainly miss playing here,” he added.
